For Him, For Them

Whenever Riel enjoys something whether food, place, or gadget, he takes a mental note to bring me there or get it for me so I experience it as well.   This time, his recent favorite is Nanbantei and he brought me there last Friday.  He was wondering if I could do it at home.

So I scheduled it for today’s menu.   This was our dinner.
My Our new best friend… the gas grill.
Firing up is easy,  just turn the knob.  Gone are the charcoal days and uneaven heating and endless “paypay”.

Riel likes variety, so I gave him variety.   I copied whatever was served to us at Nanbantei.  We had chicken wings, chicken thighs with leeks, pork ribs marinated in vinegar and garlic, asparagus, bacon-wrapped potatoes, grilled japanese corn, and I tossed in two lamb chops (because I love lamb).

Mmmm… I wish you can smell this in real life.  There’s something about the smell of “inihaw” that makes you salivate.
Doesn’t the corn look good?  It tastes better in real life.

This is my version of chicken yakitori.  I made the sauce, combining Kikkoman, sugar, sake and a little flour for thickening.   The boys loved it.  And that’s the whole point of this exercise.   See?  I’m a woman of many talents and some of them are even useful.

Raf likes to study in the kitchen.  For every sentence he writes, he asks for something to munch on.   We’re only two pounds apart.

KQOTD.  Bourne Ultimatum was showing on TV.  Riel was explaining to Raf that Jason Bourne couldn’t remember anything from his past because of amnesia.  Raf asked me: Does amnesia happen in real life?  Me: Yes, it does.  Raf (curious): Did he also forget his Math?  Like does he still know his addition and mulitplication? What about his Science lessons?  (Oh, the concerns of kids….)

KQOTD2: Home after school around 2:30pm.  Raf (complaining):  Waah, I’m so hungry.  I didn’t have lunch.  Can I eat?  Me (skeptical):  How can you not have lunch?  You had baon.  Raf (reasoning out): Coz I ate my lunch during the morning snack time.
