Day 2

We’re only on the second day of the kids’ official summer vacation and I already heard the dreaded “B” word:  “Mom, I’m bored!”  I promised the kids the other day that I will take them to the mall on Monday (I avoid the weekends) and spend a couple of hours at Time Zone and Powerbooks.  Raf also received a catalogue from Toys R Us and wanted to check the arcade toys listed there.  But Mondays are hectic for me, grocery and errands in the morning and the afternoons are just too hot.   The Monday promise became a Tuesday promise, but I got tied up with office work.

April tax season.  Preparing the yearend adjustments.

I work on Riel’s desk.  There is no way I can lay my columnar pad on my desk where my pile is artistically arranged. *ahem*  Of course, Riel doesn’t know that I use his desk while he is away at work.   And I’m brave enough to admit this on the cyberspace simply because I am confident that he doesn’t read this blog. ahem again

In the meantime, the twins busied themselves with the Wii.

They love Mario Kart, and anything Mario.  For a time, my SMS alert is the sound of the 1-up mushroom and my ringtone is “The Invincible”, the tune when Mario gets a star.  However, when we are together and the kids are playing their Mario game and these tones come up, I cannot distinguish if it was from my phone or from the video game and without fail, I would always get up and check my phone.  The kids, knowing that it was from the video game, without fail, will laugh at their silly mama.  Where’s the justice in this world?

Now, a question for you:  What happens if you have three kids and the video game has only two controllers?

Answer:  The third kid invades the computer!

Another question:  What happens if that kid knows your password?

Answer: He invades your blog and vents online!  (It reads:  This is Raf.  My mom is a little bit strict.  Since I am 8 years old, my mom won’t allow a new blog for myself.  I really want **unreadable** tennis (ally arcade) lightning al*** — I guess these are the toys he found in the catalog)

Question:  When this happens, what will the Silly Mama do?

Answer:  Delete the post!  So it will never be published!  *evil laugh here*  Smart Mama!

Other things happened during the day.   But this one got me ultra disturbed.

A Cheat Notebook???   What the???  How can my Grade 1 boy who just had his Frist Holy Communion a little over a month ago and knows the stories in the Bible, the ten commandments, and the seven sacraments by heart be able to do such thing?  Have I been remissed in teaching my kids the values of a good Christian?

So I confronted him, teary-eyed and brokenhearted.  Raf answered me (rolling his eyes): “Mom, stop it.  Will you listen first?  Did you look inside my notebook, huh?”

Oh, cheat codes!  For their video games.   *Tee hee*  Back to Silly Mama.

So today I wanted to redeem myself.  I got up early in the morning, went to my Mom’s place (I promised to date her) then got back home with two playmates.

A three-day sleepover for cousins Iya and Diego.  I have my hands full.  I hope I won’t hear the “B” word again.  Amen.

When I crave something, it always comes in three.  My latest craving is caramel.

Caramel Craving #1:  Caramel Apple

 The makings of caramel apples:

Familiar with these morsels?  Kraft Caramels.
Toss these delights in a small pot.   Add about 1-2Tbsp of water.  Stir and melt.
At this stage, your mantra is “stir and melt, stir and melt”.  Repeat 2x.

Gather your crunchy apples.  Insert popsicle stick in the center.  Line your pan with parchment so the caramel won’t stick to the pan.  Dip the apples in the melted caramel.

Let them cool.  For variation, you can add sprinklers or cover it with melted chocolate then roll on sprinklers or nuts.  For now, I’m contented with just the caramel.  Oooh!  Five apples for five family members!  What a coincidence!  Well, guess who ate two and who had none?  (Answer: Silly Mama and Hardworking Papa, in that order.   Frankly, Riel doesn’t even know we had them)

Caramel Craving #2: Chocolate Fudge with Drippy Caramel Sauce

Another of my own doing.  Next time I do it, I promise I’ll take the step-by-step picture.  The caramel sauce is homemade.   In a small pot, melt sugar (don’t put water and don’t stir).  When the sugar is melted, stir in the butter, the heavy cream, and the egg yolks.  Don’t forget to temper the egg yolks first, otherwise you’ll have scrambled egg in your caramel.  (Describe the combination of sugar, butter, heavy cream, and egg yolks —> Lethal!)

Caramel Craving #3:  Chef Tony’s Caramel Popcorn

Procedure:  (1) Go to the mall;  (2) Look for the Chef Tony Popcorn Store;  (3) Select the Caramel-flavored Popcorn; (4) Go to the counter (5) Pay P109.75 for the Large size.  (6) Munch.  (7)  Die happy.

Shameless plugging:  South Supermarket will have mascarpone cheese available by Friday.  Expires April 21.  P420 per 500g tub.  They only have 30 tubs available.  (Gin, is this available only in Filinvest Branch?)

This one is Ate’s ‘pabaon’ to me the kids:
